Nicolette Templier, Miss New York Earth 2019 - Brooklyn born to Haitian parents, Performer Nicolette Templier represents the borough of Brooklyn for Miss New York Earth, a preliminary title of Miss Earth USA in the world renowned pageant system Miss Earth. In addition to being an actress, singer-songwriter, human rights and mental health advocate, Nicolette has most recently become a Youth Representative at the United Nations for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Why is it important to celebrate Earth Day every day?

"It is important to celebrate Earth Day every day because the earth is our home every day. We should protect the planet like we protect our home. Our lifestyle and mindset should always take into consideration the effects on our environment because ultimately our negligence affects our health and livelihood!"

What does sustainability mean to you?

"Sustainability to me means making choices that can be healthily maintained long-term. Short-term gain and instant gratification are the main causes of global warming. Learning patience and taking the time to live consciously by working with our environment and not against it is sustainable."

What steps do you take to maintain a sustainable lifestyle?

"I choose to be sustainable by switching my lifestyle choices. I’ve switched to reusable metal straws, reusable portable utensils, and I always carry my reusable water bottle. I bring my own bags for shopping and refuse plastic bags. I also make my own household/beauty products including detergent, deodorant and toothpaste."

How does sustainability impact the way you shop?

"Sustainability affects my shopping because now I try to avoid any form of single use plastic or material that is not biodegradable. I mainly search for paper wrapped items, and products in glass jars that I can rinse out and reuse. I also have become much more diligent with reading ingredient labels. I prefer organic and pure ingredients so if there are too many synthetic ingredients I will not purchase the product. I use my purchasing power to make a statement to companies about what I need as a sustainability conscious consumer."
