Boy Meets Girl® Glitter 'N' Grit Features: Shauna Harlow & Haly Johnson
Glitter moments come & go. How do you push through the difficult times?
S: "I push through the difficult times by always making sure to give myself some me time. I think it’s really important to never forget about yourself and self-care when pushing through difficult times, no matter what they are. It could be as simple as watching some of my favorite movies, taking a walk, going shopping, getting my nails done, hanging with the girls, or even taking a nice bubble bath with a full glass of wine. I think it’s always important to reward yourself and find ways to cope with the difficult times and just relax! Always have positive vibes through the difficult times."
H: "I try to always make myself look at the positives. I'm real with myself, but sometimes I have to say "Ok, this sucks right now, but it will get better." For example, living in NYC is not always easy, but when it gets hard sometimes I just stop and think 'Wow, I'm living in NYC!'"
What is your key to success, your “grit”?
S: "My key to success is being organized and persistent. I rely heavily on my planner and cellphone. I am able to plan out my days and weeks on my calendar and be constantly reminded of upcoming assignments or appointments. Making connections and always keeping in contact with them is extremely important when wanting to succeed. Staying on top of your work and being persistent with what you want will only benefit you in the end. To strive for something is to continually fight for it and not give up until you are satisfied. I am always able to stay organized and on top of what I need or what and from there I strive to get it done."
H: "I've learned to embrace rejection. I know that probably sounds weird but I've realized that rejection is ok, whether in your professional or personal life because you can grow from it! If I'm rejected from something, i.e a job, I force myself to step back and ask why? Was I prepared? Did I do everything I could? Was I right for it? Rejection will always be difficult but if I can learn and grow from it, I'll only become stronger and more well-rounded."
Work hard, play hard. How do you balance work & play?
S: "Balancing work and play is definitely not easy, but staying organized and on top of things is one thing I strive to do. I am constantly making To Do lists to ensure I never forget something that needs to be completed. Making lists helps me prioritize things and being able to check off items after they are completed is very satisfying to see. I prefer to make plans in advance but spur of the moment instances occur as well. I try to plan out my weeks in advance so I can balance when and how I can complete my work and where I can squeeze in some fun time as well. No matter how busy anyone is you should always make time for play. Everyone needs a break from his or her work from time to time, to de-stress and just have fun!"
H: "This can be hard because I'm someone who is usually tight with money but I'm also quite an extrovert. I tend to want to work all the time to make money, but I also love being with people so if someone asks me to go out, I usually say yes even if it's not always something I really want to do. To find a balance, I have to tell myself it's ok to say no sometimes. I've also started to use the gym as my balance. I love working out, so I can use that as a reason to say no sometimes to going out, and I also use it as motivation to not always be working."
